Shiriusu no densetsu (Legend of Syrius) is an animated feature that was based on a short novel by Tsuji Shintarou, the creator of Hello Kitty, and was released in Japan in 1981 by Sanrio. In 1991, the feature was dubbed for American release by Sony and the title was changed to "The Sea Prince and the Fire Child". The novel is a loose retelling of the tragic star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet.
Long before Sirius and Malta were born, Sirius' father Oceanus, god of Water, and Malta's mother Hyperia, goddess of Fire, were as one. They coexisted in a loving union as a warm myst. However, Lord of the Winds, Algorac, grew jealous of Oceanus and Hyperia's love. He proceeded to turn them against one another by lying, saying one was plotting to overthrow the other. So the war between Water and Fire began. After many descendants died in this civil war, and both sides were nearly destroyed, the highest god of them all intervened and struck down Algorac. Tearing loose Algorac's eye, the source of his power, the God of the Winds was damned him to the deepest abyss of the oceans. The eye was entrusted to Oceanus in order to keep the seas calm. At the same time, Hyperia created a Holy Flame near the sea that would, in her opinion, keep the seas calm so that her children of Fire would live forever and never be extinguished. From that point on, the two elemental siblings were forever parted to keep peace between them.
Years later, Prince Sirius became heir to the Sea Kingdom and received the Eye of Algorac to protect. Likewise, Hyperia's daughter, Princess Malta, was the new heir to the Fire Kingdom and was charged with guarding the Holy Flame at the edge of the sea until the solar eclipse of her sixteenth birthday. The two suddenly meet and are bound by an impossible love.
