Charlotte Elbourne is thought to have been kidnapped by the vampire lord Meier Link. However, the relationship is mutual and consensual. He refuses to turn her into a vampire, even though it would ensure them remaining together forever. Charlotte watches helplessly from inside the coach while D and Meier battle on the roof. She cries out Meier's name because she is concerned, alerting D that she truly cares for the vampire. The lovers wish for nothing more than peace; they want to retreat from our mortal world to the place of eternal darkness. So their love may survive.
