Charlotte Elbourne is thought to have been kidnapped by the vampire lord Meier Link. However, the relationship is mutual and consensual. He refuses to turn her into a vampire, even though it would ensure them remaining together forever. Meier has allowed Charlotte to step outside the carriage, so she may enjoy the sunlight. The lovers wish for nothing more than peace; they want to retreat from our mortal world to the place of eternal darkness. So their love may survive.
